Stay High in Alta This Summer

This new normal we find ourselves in has tested our physical and mental health, sense of productivity and trust in the world around us. We left you two long months ago when things looked very different. And that includes the snow.

As we look ahead to summer plans, being conscious of the “dos and don’ts” is at the forefront of our minds. One activity this summer has potential to make its mark on the 2020 Alta off-season: hiking.

With over 13 miles of Forest Service trails, there are plenty of options to enjoy the majesty and serenity of Alta this summer. With the ability to remain in small, close-knit groups and social distancing having always been the name-of-the-game, there’s no better time to responsibly enjoy the great outdoors while we remain indoors.

Check out a couple of our favorite trails and sights of the Alta season few get to experience.

Lower Albion Meadows Trail

The perfect trail for new hikers and veteran hikers looking for a different launching point, the Lower Albion Meadows Trail is family-friendly and as scenic as it gets.

The wide trail heads east towards the Albion base area, next to what used to be the main strip of our home, Alta. The trail continues to pass through fields of wildflowers on a snow-absent Alf’s High Rustler, one of the most recognizable pitches in skiing.

Towards the end of the trail, an adventurous creek crossing awaits. From there, connections to more extensive trails towards the Albion Basin Campground and Cecret Lake Trailhead await. Whether you get your kicks from powder or flowers, this trail has something for everyone.

Catherine’s Pass Trail

A local favorite, Catherine’s Pass Trail is a moderately difficult route with amazing payoffs. Accessible from the Albion Meadows Trail from above, this route gives hikers a little taste of everything.

Climbing uphill, hikers are rewarded with scenic views of Devil’s castle and the Albion Basin before entering a wooded area, providing shade and opportunities for spotting deer, moose and butterflies. Continuing uphill out of the woods, the peak of the trail opens up views of the Alta-Brighton lakes Catherine, Martha and Mary.
